Signs that your finance function might need some support

There are usually a few indicators that come up before a business reaches out. Often they’ve been there for a while — they just haven’t been the immediate priority.

Some of the more common ones:

  • Year-end fills you with dread — not because the year has gone badly, but because things have been building up quietly in the background
  • Month-end takes longer than it should, and the numbers aren’t trusted when they come out
  • Balance sheet reconciliations aren’t being done — or haven’t been done properly in some time
  • VAT returns are being filed but nobody’s really reviewing them in detail
  • There are known issues or adjustments that keep getting pushed back
  • The team is busy, but a lot of the work is reactive rather than planned
  • Reports are produced, but they don’t really drive any decisions
  • A key person left or is leaving, and there’s a gap that needs covering

None of these are unusual — they come up regularly in businesses of all sizes, and they don’t necessarily mean the finance function is failing. But they do tend to compound over time if they’re not addressed.

In most cases, the underlying issues aren’t complicated. What’s usually needed is someone who can come in, get a proper view of where things stand, and help put the right structure in place — whether that’s for a defined period or on an ongoing basis.

If any of this sounds familiar, feel free to get in touch.
